Fog Panther v0.8.3 - Selection, Gradients, and Retouching

October 22, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fog Panther v0.8.3 brings a reworked Background Remove tool with hair-accurate edges, new selection and path tools, and a complete gradient system with presets, an editor and live PSD Gradient Fill layers. Retouching gains Blur and Sharpen tools, guided Spot Healing and a faster, smoother Smudge, and every filter now works at full 16-bit precision. Background and shape layers, Edit > Fill, a reworked Warp and touchpad navigation in every view round out a release focused on working the way Photoshop users expect.

Background Remove, Rebuilt

Background Remove now separates a subject from its background with much finer edges. Auto-Detect models the backdrop itself rather than sampling its corners, so it handles backdrops lit from one side, gradient and dark studio backdrops, and tightly cropped portraits without eating into faces. Individual strands of hair are matted continuously instead of breaking into dashes, and color decontamination removes the backdrop's tint from the edges.

Auto-Detect runs in the background, so the window stays responsive on large photos and a Stop button cancels it at any time. The result can be applied as a selection, a layer mask or a new masked layer; applying a mask to the Background layer converts it to a regular layer first, as Photoshop does.

Selection and Path Tools

New Path Selection and Direct Selection tools select, move and reshape whole paths and individual anchor points. The Polygonal Lasso and Magnetic Lasso join the Lasso tool, and the Move and selection tools now behave as Photoshop's do, with live previews in the Move tool's fields.

Gradients

Gradients gain presets, a Gradients panel and a full Gradient Editor, along with the Classic, Perceptual and Linear interpolation methods. Gradients follow Photoshop's geometry, and 32-bit documents blend them in linear light. PSD Gradient Fill layers now open and save as live, editable fills instead of flattened pixels.

Layer Effects and Patterns

Gradient Overlay adds the Angle, Reflected and Diamond styles, and Pattern Overlay now stores its pattern inside .fog files. Both overlays can be repositioned by dragging directly on the canvas while their dialog is open.

Retouching and Painting

New Blur and Sharpen tools paint focus changes directly onto an image. Spot Healing gains a guided mode, and the Smudge tool is faster and smoother. Brushes now reach 5000 pixels, Space works as a temporary Hand tool and H as Bird's Eye View, and the Shape and Text tools rotate from a corner as the selection tools do.

Layers, Fill and Warp

Documents now have a true Background layer, which keeps its position and takes paint and filters like Photoshop's. Every shape is its own shape layer, with Fill and Stroke settings in the options bar. Edit > Fill fills a selection or layer with a color, a pattern or content-aware fill, and the Warp transform has been reworked to match Photoshop's. Rulers can show other units and mark the pointer's position.

Filters at Full Precision

Every filter now processes 16-bit images at 16 bits, including Lab and CMYK documents, and 32-bit float images are filtered in floating point where the filter supports it. The Photo Editor gains a histogram with clipping warnings, a Radial Blur filter is added, and the CMYK engine now composites 16-bit documents at full precision.

Faster Everyday Work

File > Export > Quick Export as PNG saves a copy in one step. A touchpad pans and a mouse wheel zooms in every view, panning keeps part of the image in view, and Ctrl+Alt+H and Ctrl+Alt+V flip the image. Out-of-gamut and web-safe color alerts appear right in the color controls.

HEIC Images

HEIC photos from phones and cameras now open using the decoder already installed on your system, in every package except the Snap.

Verified on Current Linux

Every native package was installed and verified before release on Ubuntu 24.04, Linux Mint 22, Debian 13, Fedora 44 and 45, Arch Linux, CachyOS and Manjaro. The Flatpak, Snap, AppImage and tarball are available as before, and the AppImage now runs natively under Wayland.

Bug Fixes and Stability

This release includes a broad round of correctness work: filters keep exact pixel values when nothing changes, dialogs always act on the document they were opened for, selections keep the view in place, CMYK saves fail gracefully and YCCK JPEGs open correctly, and many interface refinements. Translations are updated in all six supported languages.
